Moving the Goalposts

Like I said, Elmley was a working prison and personally I don’t think that’s such a bad thing. Or it wouldn’t have been if they’d actually let me do some work. They said I couldn’t work in seven parts of the prison because I was too high profile. Talk about setbacks and knockbacks fucking hell, I’ve been knocked back more times than George Best from his local and it was a constant struggle against the system, but I never gave up.

I got on well with the gym screws and by the time I’d made it onto House block 5 I’d got a job as a gym orderly. This really was the cream of the jobs for me because you did your cleaning, you worked with the handicapped or whatever and then in your free time you could train when you liked. You didn’t have to queue up in the morning and put your name down for training like the others did and, I’ll tell you now, Elmley’s got the best gym in the whole prison system and it’s as good as any on the outside. It’s even got an 11aside Astroturf football pitch outside, which was great because I got picked for the team.

I’ll tell you, if I didn’t get to the gym it used to drive me mad. But it was okay, as I was getting to the gym Monday to Friday, so now I was doing my training and playing my football and also losing a bit of weight and getting my sharpness back. This was very important to me, because one of those goals I’d set myself in prison was to lose a bit of weight and to come out looking sweet. It’s not that easy when the authorities have only got 90p a day to feed you on, so you’re getting a lot of bread, potatoes and rice, which isn’t much good to you when you’re banged up for hours without getting the chance to burn it off. Also, if you’ve eaten at about 5.45 p.m. and you’re getting banged up two hours later, by about 9 or 10 p.m. you start getting a bit peckish. You can see how easy it would be to put on weight, not lose it, but because I had the gym training I managed to lose over two stone. When I finally did get out everyone said, “Fuck me, you ain’t half looking well, Jase,” and I’d just smile and say, “See, things aren’t so bad.”

The only drawback I could see with the gym orderly job was that it was one where you might be tempted to cause a bit of trouble, as you’ve got to give the vest, shorts, etc., to the nonces, the rapists and the child molesters, the grasses, the fucking internet paedophiles. They were segregated from us at all other times, except when they came down to the gym, which would only be in the evenings. As it happened, in the end even that didn’t affect me because I never had to work with them myself.
